"My Care Binder" Developed as Guide for Patients

Thursday, December 13, 2012

A cancer diagnosis is likely to evoke an overwhelming amount of emotions.  During this time, patients and their families will differ in the amount of information they want to know. For some, they may wish to know all of the details and seek out additional information independently. Others may initially choose to know less, but as time passes, they may wish to know more details about their diagnosis and care. To put it simply, there is no ‘one size fits all’ education prescription to meet the informational needs of our patients and families.

A new educational resource, titled “My Care Binder” has been developed to act as a guide for patients and their families across the cancer care continuum. This binder provides a place to record information, write down questions, learn about the supportive care services available, and organize educational resources they will collect along the way. The contents have been divided into twelve sections, making it simple for patients to navigate. For those who choose to learn less early on, they may wish to read through the section titled” Just Diagnosed” to get started. Other sections include: About Me, London Regional Cancer Program, Finances, Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, Side Effects, Nutrition, Counselling, Spiritual Support, Other Resources, and After Treatment. For patients who live in the South West region, there is information about the types of cancer care that may be available close to home. The binder also includes a business card sleeve to keep track of the key members of their healthcare team, as well as an application to the Patient Assistance Program for those who require short-term financial assistance.

It is our hope that this resource will enhance patients’ awareness about the supports available to them and their caregivers, both at the cancer program and within the community. Furthermore, it may also alleviate some of the stress associated with trying to stay organized during a chaotic time. The information included in this binder is the result of a collaboration between London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP) staff, Patient Education, and most importantly, our patients. Copies are available through the LRCP main reception and St.Joseph’s Breast Care Centre in London.
