Today is National Aboriginal Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FNIM) peoples.

Together with FNIM nations and other Aboriginal partners, Cancer Care Ontario developed an Aboriginal Cancer Strategy in 2004 to address cancer issues, and create unique and diverse solutions for healing and health. Now in its third edition, the Plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to address the unique cancer care issues affecting Aboriginal communities in Ontario and outlines Cancer Care Ontario’s commitment for improving the FNIM patient journey.

Did you know? Based on current lifestyle trends, cancer incidence rates for major cancers are increasing more rapidly among First Nations people, and cancer survival is worse in this population compared with other Ontarians. Cancer Care Ontario has appointed Aboriginal Cancer Leads and Aboriginal Patient Navigators in all regional cancer programs to offer individualized assistance to help residents overcome healthcare system barriers and facilitate timely access to care for First Nation, Inuit & Metis (FNIM) patients and families.

Meet Chantel. Chantel is an Aboriginal Patient Navigator who works at the London Regional Cancer Program. Chantel liaises with and advocates for the needs of First Nation, Inuit & Métis patients with cancer and their families across the region. She also works to improve access to cancer services, while addressing cultural and spiritual needs. Watch the video below to learn more about Chantel and her important role.
